Concrete segregation is the separation of the individual components within a fresh concrete mix.
A well-balanced concrete mix should remain cohesive during transportation, placement and compaction. The components (cement, sand, water and aggregate) should stay sufficiently evenly distributed to create consistent concrete once it has hardened.
With segregated concrete, that uniformity begins to break down. Heavier coarse aggregate may settle or separate from the mortar, while cement or water can accumulate elsewhere in the concrete.
In simple terms, good concrete should behave as one consistent material. When its ingredients start behaving separately, there is a problem.
Severe segregation can result in concentrations of coarse aggregate in some areas and excess mortar or cement paste in others.
