thermal lightweight aggregate

When planning a construction project, choosing the right floor materials can make a big difference to thermal performance, weight, and overall efficiency.

Thermal lightweight aggregate (TLA) offers a practical solution when insulation, reduced weight, and floor levelling are key considerations.

But what exactly is thermal lightweight aggregate, what is it made from, and why is it becoming a useful option for both domestic and commercial construction projects?

What Is Thermal Lightweight Aggregate?

Thermal lightweight aggregate, commonly known as TLA, is a lightweight, thermally insulating material used in floor construction.

Unlike traditional concrete or sand-and-cement screed, which rely on relatively heavy aggregates, Flowmix’s thermal lightweight aggregate incorporates expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads to create a much lighter material.

TLA is typically installed as an insulating and levelling layer beneath a suitable floor screed, improving thermal performance while reducing the overall weight of the floor construction.

It can be particularly useful on projects where uneven substrates, variations in floor height or structural weight restrictions present challenges.

What Is Thermal Lightweight Aggregate Made From?

Flowmix’s TLA uses expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads within a cement-based mixture.

The three main components are:

  • Expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads: Lightweight beads with numerous tiny, air-filled cells that provide thermal insulation and reduce the material’s density.
  • Cement-based binder: Holds the beads together, creating a cohesive material once the mixture has set.
  • Water: Allows the ingredients to be mixed and placed according to the product specification.

EPS beads give TLA its distinctive characteristics.

Expanded polystyrene consists largely of trapped air, which is a poor conductor of heat. This cellular structure helps reduce heat transfer through the material.

At the same time, the beads weigh considerably less than conventional sand and stone aggregates, making the resulting mixture significantly lighter than traditional concrete.

Once mixed and installed, TLA forms a lightweight insulating layer that can be incorporated into a suitable floor construction system.

What Are the Benefits of Thermal Lightweight Aggregate?

#1: Improved Thermal Insulation

One of the biggest advantages of thermal lightweight aggregate is its insulating performance. The tiny, air-filled cells within EPS beads slow heat transfer through the floor.

As part of a properly designed floor system, TLA can help reduce heat loss and improve energy efficiency. This makes it particularly relevant for projects where thermal performance matters.

#2: Significantly Reduced Weight

Traditional concrete and sand-and-cement screeds can place considerable weight on a building’s structure.

By replacing heavier aggregates with lightweight EPS beads, TLA provides a lower-density alternative for suitable floor applications.

This can be especially beneficial in refurbishment projects, upper floors, and buildings where additional structural loading must be carefully controlled.

#3: Levelling Uneven Floors

Not every construction project begins with a perfectly level surface.

Existing substrates may have uneven areas, height changes, or irregularities that need to be addressed before installing the final floor layers.

Thermal lightweight aggregate can help fill these areas and establish the required floor levels, providing a suitable base for subsequent layers when installed to the correct specification.

#4: Efficient Pumped Installation

On larger projects, moving materials around a construction site can be time-consuming and labour-intensive.

Suitable EPS-based thermal lightweight aggregate mixtures can be pumped directly into the required location, reducing the need to transport materials manually across the site.

Pumping can be particularly useful where access is restricted or where large floor areas need to be covered efficiently.

#5: Versatility Across Different Projects

Thermal lightweight aggregate can be used in a variety of domestic and commercial construction applications.

Its combination of reduced weight, thermal insulation, and levelling properties makes it a useful option when conventional, heavier materials may not be the most practical choice.

Where Is Thermal Lightweight Aggregate Used?

TLA can be incorporated into several types of floor construction, depending on the product specification and the building’s requirements.

Common applications include:

  • Domestic floor construction: Creating lightweight insulating layers beneath suitable screed systems.
  • Commercial buildings: Providing insulating floor build-ups across larger floor areas.
  • Renovation and refurbishment: Reducing the additional weight imposed on existing structures.
  • Uneven floor substrates: Filling irregularities and accommodating variations in floor height.
  • Floor void filling: Providing a lightweight fill where the specified system permits.
  • Underfloor heating installations: Forming part of an insulating layer beneath the heating system.

TLA suitability for any application depends on factors such as required thickness, loading, thermal performance, and compatibility with the remaining floor construction.

Thermal Lightweight Aggregate vs Traditional Screed: What’s the Difference?

Although thermal lightweight aggregate and traditional screed can both be used in floor construction, they perform different functions.

Traditional sand-and-cement screed is generally installed to create a level, durable surface ready to receive the final floor covering.

Thermal lightweight aggregate, on the other hand, is primarily used to provide lightweight fill, thermal insulation and floor levelling within the overall floor build-up.

TLA is not normally intended to act as the finished wearing surface. Instead, a suitable screed or other specified layer is typically installed above it.

This means the two materials can work together, with the TLA providing insulation and lightweight fill beneath the screed that supports the finished flooring.

Can Thermal Lightweight Aggregate Be Used with Underfloor Heating?

Yes, thermal lightweight aggregate can form part of a floor construction incorporating underfloor heating, provided the system is designed appropriately.

Underfloor heating works by transferring warmth from the heating system into the room above.

However, without suitable insulation beneath the heating installation, some heat can travel downwards into the underlying floor structure.

An insulating layer incorporating TLA can help limit this downward heat loss.

It’s important to distinguish between the insulating layer and the screed surrounding the heating pipes. The latter needs suitable thermal conductivity to distribute heat effectively.

Therefore, establish the correct floor build-up before installation, taking into account the heating system, insulation requirements, and specified screed.

Is Thermal Lightweight Aggregate Suitable for Renovation Projects?

Renovation and refurbishment projects often present challenges not found in new construction.

Existing floors may be uneven, structural loading may be restricted, and available floor depths can vary considerably.

Thermal lightweight aggregate can help in these situations because it combines low weight with insulating and levelling properties.

For example, if an existing floor requires substantial levelling, conventional dense materials could add unnecessary weight.

A suitable lightweight aggregate system may provide a more practical alternative.

However, always assess the condition and load-bearing capacity of the existing structure before specifying the floor build-up.

What to Consider Before Choosing TLA

Not all thermal lightweight aggregate products have identical properties, so it’s important to work from the technical specification of the material being supplied.

Consider required thermal performance, available installation depth, expected floor loads, substrate condition, installation requirements, drying or curing times, and compatibility with other materials such as screed layers.

Thermal Lightweight Aggregate from Flowmix

Thermal lightweight aggregate offers a practical combination of reduced weight, thermal insulation, and floor-levelling capabilities.

By incorporating lightweight EPS beads, TLA can effectively replace heavier conventional floor-fill materials in suitable applications.

Whether you’re working on a domestic renovation, new-build development or commercial construction project, choosing the right floor materials from the outset can make installation easier and help achieve the required performance.
